At Bethany Church, we are blessed with a community of dedicated volunteers who faithfully give their time, energy, and talents to glorify God. This month, we are honored to recognize Dr. Larkey Mays, a devoted member of our Music Ministry for over 32 years. His unwavering commitment, passion for worship, and dedication to service exemplify the heart of ministry at Bethany.
A Calling That Became a Lifelong Commitment
When Dr. Mays joined Bethany Church in 1993, he was immediately drawn to the powerful Praise and Worship of the music ministry, and the life-changing Word preached each Sunday. Having been immersed in music since childhood—singing and playing instruments—his heart naturally gravitated toward the Music Ministry. But what has kept him serving all these years? His answer is simple yet profound:
“I made a vow to the Lord a very long time ago, that I would serve Him until I die. He keeps taking care of me, so I can keep my promise to Him.”
For Dr. Mays, music is more than a passion—it is a covenant between him and God, a promise he continues to fulfill every time he lifts his voice or plays an instrument in worship.
Music as an Offering to God
Serving in ministry is not just about participation; it is about transformation. Over the years, Dr. Mays has seen firsthand how music can prepare hearts to receive the Word and change lives.
“My participation in the music ministry is one of the ways I give back to Him. It is my offering to Him. It is my reasonable service. Music fills my soul.”
Music is an act of worship, a sacred gift returned to the One who gave it. Through every note sung and played, Dr. Mays experiences deeper intimacy with God, knowing that his service helps create an atmosphere where people can encounter His presence.
The Power of Worship Through Music
Each Sunday, the Music Ministry plays an essential role in leading the congregation into worship. But beyond the melodies and harmonies, there are moments when God moves in ways that remind us why we serve. When asked to recall a moment when music truly touched someone’s life, Dr. Mays shared:
“We experience it every Sunday. The music ministry and the creative fine arts, in general, help usher in God’s presence. He inhabits the praises of His people. And it is in those moments, when individuals make the decision to give their lives to Christ, those are the most meaningful and impactful moments of our worship services.”
Each song, each note, and each voice raised in praise plays a part in leading people to salvation. The presence of God is tangible in worship, and Dr. Mays has been a faithful steward of this sacred responsibility.
Worship as a Personal Journey
For Dr. Mays, worship is not just an act—it is an experience that fills his soul.
“Worship music fills my soul. Being part of the Music Ministry allows me to share this joy with others.”
His heart for worship is evident in the way he serves, always seeking to uplift others and draw them closer to Christ through the power of music.
A Call to Serve
To those considering joining the Music Ministry or volunteering in any capacity, Dr. Mays offers this encouragement:
“Volunteering in church is about making a difference in the lives of others. We share God’s love, God’s joy, God’s peace, and the message of salvation through songs.”
Volunteering is an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ, to impact lives, and to experience the joy of serving. Whether through music, hospitality, outreach, or any other ministry, there is always a place to serve and a way to make a difference.
